Director and Dramaturg.
Cathy Hunt is a dramaturg and director known for her feminist, irreverent arts practice, which explores vulnerable subjectivities and the uncanny within everyday life. Her work challenges traditional ideas of theatre through collaboration and innovation.
Cathy has collaborated with various writers, including Georgia Ketels on Recollection at fortyfivedownstairs, a play with live scent design, and Andrea Ciannavei on 7 Captiva Rd at Chapel off Chapel. She directed Little Brother Big Sister at La Mama, the debut play by Michel Tuomy, a writer with lived experience of schizophrenia.
As a director and dramaturg, Cathy has developed numerous works, such as Love/Chamberlain by Bridget Mackey, Her Father’s Daughter by Keziah Warner, Tiny Remarkable Bramble by Jessica Tuckwell and Steppe by Grace Pundyk. She directed What Every Girl Should Know by Monica Byrne. She co-created The Super Queer Murderess Show with Luisa Hastings Edge and Nate Gilkes and worked on live performance art with Shannon Loughnane, including The One and (I’m Going to Die in this Bracket), about their relationship to money, which was nominated for Best Theatre at Melbourne Fringe 2020.
Cathy performs as her alter ego, feminist performance poet Beige Brown, in shows like Ms Beige Brown Goes Beyond at Melbourne International Comedy Festival. She contributed to multi-artform work Dybbuks by Samara Hersch and Chamber Made, and directed Les Mamelles de Tiresias for Lyric Opera, which won a Green Room Award. Cathy is working with Forest Collective to shape Labyrinth, their upcoming dance-opera and piano concerto at Abbotsford Convent.
Cathy holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance Creation (Directing) from the Victorian College of the Arts, where she received a Creative Scholarship, and a BA Honours in English Literature, Theatre, and Film from UNSW. She undertook post-graduate studies at the University of York through a Commonwealth Scholarship and a mid-career Dramaturgy Mentorship with Playwriting Australia.
