It’s A Matter Of Time

Forest Collective presents a season of solo and chamber music concerts at The Eleventh Hour Theatre, Fitzroy. Exploring the nature of art as a vessel for healing, intimacy and wonder, It's A Matter Of Time will feature dance, music and poetry from local Naarm-based artists and composers, alongside contemporary and canonical works.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the performance of Tonic originally scheduled for Friday 4 October 7.30pm has been cancelled. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes and hope that those who were wanting to attend Tonic will join us at another one of our October performances.

We will keep you updates of when Tonic will be re-staged in the future.

Folding

Curated by Forest Collective’s Kim Tan, Folding explores modern subjectivity and the inexorable relationship creativity has with the past. This entanglement is a metaphor for Kim’s own creativity and  the expression it finds within her body. Folding is layered with musings on the dialectic between past and present, which find voice through early and new music, period instruments and contemporary dance.

The centrepiece is a new commission for baroque flute and percussion by Evan J Lawson, which reimagines period instruments beyond their historical context, giving them contemporary expression through New Music.

Folding will reach back in time to return the staid form of the ‘Baroque dance suite’ to its historical origins in movement and the body, and will be given visceral modern expression through the haunting choreography of Ashley Dougan. This tension between stasis and fluidity will be further explored through interwoven improvisatory works, with drone, based on excerpts from Jordi Savall’s Lachrimae Caravaggio.

My Heart

“Nights I wander the world’s city streets, looking for you and talking to you, my heart.”

- Danaë Killian

Maverick pianist Danaë Killian will show the world her cracked and shining heart in a thrilling solo recital, inspired by German Expressionist poet Else Lasker-Schüler’s provocative work Mein Herz: Ein Liebesroman mit Bildern und wirklich lebenden Menschen (1912).

My Heart is a musical escape from the scintillating, but ultimately doomed artistic counterculture of pre-World War One Berlin, so powerfully evoked in Lasker-Schüler’s novel.

My Heart is made of music by Danaë’s beloved local composer friends, by Danaë herself, and by Arnold Schoenberg, Lasker-Schüler’s contemporary, who once gave the poet money in a time of need.

Lasker-Schüler’s Berlin of 1911 bleeds through Danaë Killian’s My Heart into our Naarm-Melbourne, and in so doing invokes themes of night-wandering, soul-homelessness, and starry yearning.

A portion of the proceeds from this performance will go towards the creation of an album of My Heart.

It’s A Matter Of Time

‘Time that is moved by little fidget wheels is not my time - the flood that does not flow.’

- Kenneth Slessor

The artists of Forest Collective come together for a tumultuous journey through beauty, melancholia, desire, and irrepressible energy, as they explore humanity’s struggle with the inexorable passage of time. Through music, the most temporally linear of all art forms, It's A Matter Of Time grapples with the shared experiences of our short lives against the backdrop of nature’s sprawling eternity.
