Since I was a kid, I've always enjoyed making things so there was a natural inclination towards arts, crafts, and music. I guess over time it gradually became more and more a way of living rather than a moment of escape.

One of my absolute favourite projects was Skin Deep curated by Nikki Edgar in 2018.

One of my favourite artists is Francis Bacon, I love many of his works but particularly his series of studies for self-portrait.

My friend put me on to local DJ, Unknown Concept. I've been listening to a lot of their sets lately - it just makes me want to get up and move.
Kim Tan is a Naarm based interdisciplinary musician and teacher whose practice is shaped by the creative diversity of contemporary music performance. Studying with local teachers such as Mardi McSullea, Greg Dikmans, Lawrence Whiffin, and Margaret Crawford, Kim has developed an approach to her craft that embraces the cross-section between several musical disciplines. She studied in Germany in 2009 under the tutelage of flautist, Camille Hoitenga (Cologne) and during this time she had lessons with international soloists including Andras Adorjan (Musikhochschule Munich), Felix Renggli (Musikhochschule Freiburg), and Renate Greiss-Armin (Musikhochschule Karlsruhe). Kim has also performed in masterclasses and lessons with international soloists including Michael Cox (the Royal Academy of Music, London) and Katherine Kemler (Louisiana State University).
Kim completed a PhD at the University of Melbourne; her thesis is a philosophical inquiry into music performance through the works of philosopher Gilles Deleuze with the aim of establishing a more inclusive and creative discourse. Kim is flautist and core musician of Forest Collective. She has commissioned and premiered contemporary compositions for modern flute and flauto traverso. She has performed world premieres of works by Micah Thompson, Thomas Meadowcroft, and Klaus Lang, her repertoire also includes local premiers of works by Salvatore Sciarrino, Clarence Barlow, Liza Lim, Elliot Carter, and Morton Feldman.
